Born and raised on the race track, McLaren is one of the most renowned F1 teams in the world and, dedicated to creating breath-taking performance road cars, they continue to push and rethink boundaries.
Take the 570S GT4, for instance – the most successful GT race car McLaren has ever built. Ever since its debut in 2017, it has racked up more wins and podium finishes than any other McLaren to date. Like any other race car, it conforms to strict motorsport regulations. But what would the 570S GT4 be like if there weren’t any restrictions?
The simple answer is the McLaren 620R.
Renowned as the most powerful car in the Sports Series, the McLaren 620R retains the DNA of a race car yet is free from race regulations. It’s naturally formidable and can travel 0-62mph in just 2.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 200mph!
It boasts stiffer powertrain mounts that reduce inertia under high load, a 7-speed SSG gearbox for super-fast shift times, and the GT4’s manually adjustable dampers that offer 32 clicks of adjustment at each corner.
As well as this, the 620R offers a lightweight suspension with aluminium wishbones and stiffer anti-roll bars, not to mention a lightweight braking system and McLaren Senna-derived brake booster – making it a sharp performer on both the road and track.
The GT4’s adjustable carbon fibre rear wing lends itself nicely to the McLaren 620R and, when set at the most aggressive of its three angles, adds 185kg of extra downforce at 155mph. The front bumper, splitter and bonnet have all been redesigned for the road – adding 65kg extra downforce at the front.
In 2020, McLaren’s in-house designers launched an upgrade pack for the limited edition supercar – the ‘R Pack’. It adds several mechanical and cosmetic tweaks which improve the car’s performance while making it look (and sound) more like a GT4.
What’s new for the McLaren 620R with the R Pack?
- More carbon fibre
The R Pack includes a new gloss carbon fibre roof scoop, which is both functional and stylish. It also has a carbon fibre interior trim and vents for the front wings which release the high-pressure air (that builds up during faster track driving) from the wheel wells.
- Titanium exhaust system
Unlike any other within the McLaren Sports Series, the 620R benefits from a titanium exhaust that is 5 decibels louder and – according to McLaren – gives a sharper, more distinctive sound. On top of this, it’s also slightly lighter and more free-flowing than the factory setup.
Why not treat yourself?
If money is no object, and you’re looking for a supercar that is exclusive and extreme in equal measure, then the McLaren 620R ticks all the right boxes.
However, if it’s not something that your budget allows, perhaps consider upgrading to a titanium exhaust, like the R Pack has? In fact, a few tweaks here and there could really improve the look, feel and performance of your vehicle – without burning a hole through your pocket.
