What is stainless steel ph13 8?
First things first, stainless steel ph13 8 is an alloy, a martensitic precipitation hardening stainless steel, that boasts excellent strength, hardness, toughness and corrosion resistance. It’s a medium to high strength material that’s achieved through appropriate ageing treatments and produced by Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM), followed by Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR).
Alloy 13-8 stainless steel is usually supplied in annealed condition (also known as solution heat condition or ‘Condition A’). To allow a complete martensitic transformation, it is solution treated between 913 and 940°C for 15-30 minutes, then air-cooled or oil quenched to below 15.5°C. The ageing temperature and time differ depending on the desired final properties.
When compared to other ferrous-based materials, alloy 13-8 stainless steel offers a range of mechanical properties which are ideal under severe environmental conditions. What’s more, it can be strengthened even further by relatively low-temperature heat treatment.
What is ph13 8Mo used for?
Typical applications of stainless steel ph13 8Mo include:
- Fasteners
- Valves
- Fittings
- Petrochemical components
- Aircraft structural parts
Stainless steel ph13 8Mo fasteners are made available to various industries in a choice of standards and specifications (e.g. AMS 5629, UNS S13800 and W.Nr 1.4534).
They are often used in aerospace components, landing gear, nuclear reactor components, motorsports components and injection moulding equipment; as well as condensers, heat exchangers, offshore drilling industries and pharmaceuticals.
