Ti-Tek Titanium Specialists

What is a Titanium Plate?

Titanium is a highly versatile metal used in a range of industries. Its biocompatibility means that it is less likely to be rejected by the human body than some other materials – making it ideal for medical implants and surgical instruments.

Its low density also makes it the ideal material to provide support for broken bones and aid in the healing of other injuries – and also explains its popularity in the aerospace industry.

Titanium has the highest tensile strength-to-density ratio of any existing metal – which means that it is light enough to be used in the construction of aircraft and in similar places where weight makes all the difference, but strong enough to withstand significant stress.

It’s also one of the most attractive metals and can be polished to a lustrous finish. This, combined with its lightness and durability, makes it ideal for use in the design of items such as laptops.

Ti-TEK are specialist suppliers of titanium products – including titanium plates and sheets. But what exactly is a titanium plate? In this article, the Ti-TEK team explains.

Titanium Plates vs Sheets

Used for a wide range of purposes, including medical implants and vehicle manufacturing, titanium plate is among the most popular products at Ti-TEK.

We also fabricate and supply titanium sheets – and there is a difference between the two types of metal product.

Generally, a titanium plate is somewhat thicker than a titanium sheet. Some plates can be as thick as 150mm – or even more – while the thinnest plates measure around 2mm thick.

Sheets, on the other hand, can often be less than 1mm thick. However, there can be some crossover between the two types, with some sheets reaching 25mm in thickness.

Often, plates are custom-fabricated, while sheets may be cut from a continuous roll – but, again, this isn’t always the case.

Titanium Plates at Ti-TEK

The titanium metal plates and sheets at Ti-TEK are available in Grades 1 and 2 (ASTM B265 + F67), with Grade 5 (Ti 6Al/4V AMS 4911) available on request.

Grade 1 is the most ductile type of titanium. It’s extremely tough and great for welding and cold forming. It is highly corrosion-resistant too – however, Grade 2 is even better when it comes to resisting corrosion and oxidation.

Grade 2 is harder and stronger than Grade 1, and also welds very well.

Grade 5 titanium is an alloy that is exceptionally strong and tough. As with 1 and 2, it’s great for welding – but is also a superb material for fabrication. Grade 5 titanium also contains aluminum, vanadium and iron.

All of the above grades of titanium are ideal for use in aerospace engineering, medical environments and marine applications.

Our products can be manufactured with a minimum thickness of 0.5mm, which weighs 2.26kg per square metre – and a maximum of 60mm, weighing in at 270.6kg per square metre. We have a wide range of sizes available.
