Where can you find titanium?

Titanium is a metal, renowned for its strength, often found in armour, steel alloys and aircraft. But remember, it’s not just any metal – it’s a transition metal, meaning it can be alloyed with other elements to produce a metallic compound.

Discovered by amateur geologist, William Gregor, in 1791, titanium is the 9th most abundant element in the earth’s crust, of which it makes up 0.57%. The metal is found in rocks and minerals across the globe. But where else can you find titanium?

Marine applications

Titanium is used in the marine consumer market for weight reduction and corrosion resistance. Crevice corrosion, pitting, cracking and stress corrosion – all common issues resulting from prolonged contact with salty sea water – pose no issue for this metal, making it an ideal choice.

As a result of its resistance to seawater, titanium bars, and other products, such as pipes, plates, sheets and tubes, are used for:

  • ship propellers
  • hulls for ships
  • piping systems
  • waste systems
  • tie-downs

…and various other components that are exposed to the sea.

Aerospace

Titanium metal is used as an alloying agent with other metals, such as iron, molybdenum and aluminium – combining only the best properties. Titanium alloys are mainly used in aerospace to build aircraft and engines where strong, lightweight, temperature-resistant materials are needed.

Fashion and apparel

Ranging from eyeglass frames and watches, right through to wedding bands and earrings, titanium has found its place in the fashion and jewellery industry. Titanium sheets and wire are shaped and laser cut to produce intricate pieces of jewellery that are practical, comfortable to wear and stylish.

Sports equipment

For many sports, weight reduction of equipment is crucial and can enhance performance. Thanks to titanium’s high strength to low density, it is often the metal of choice for the sports manufacturing industry.

Titanium bars, tubes, plates and sheets are used to produce all kinds of sports and recreational equipment, including:

  • bikes
  • camping equipment
  • golf clubs
  • hiking equipment
  • skis
  • tennis rackets
